What property owners and tenants need to know about Fort Collins’ new trash collection service

Today we’re sharing some recent updates regarding Fort Collins’ waste management system. As of September 30, 2024, Fort Collins will be transitioning to a new trash collection service provided by Republic Services. According to city officials, “this change is designed to increase opportunities for compositing and recycling, provide equitable, consistent pricing across the community, as well as increase safety and reduce emissions by reducing the number of trash trucks on residential streets.”

Overview of the New Service:

Republic Services will offer five service levels to accommodate the diverse needs of the community:

  1. XS Cart Service (35-gallon trash cart collected every two weeks): $11.10 per month

  2. S Cart Service (35-gallon cart): $19.10 per month

  3. M Cart Service (65-gallon cart): $37.10 per month

  4. L Cart Service (95-gallon cart): $55.10 per month

  5. XL Cart Service (2 x 95-gallon carts): $109.10 per month

Each service level includes weekly trash collection (except for XS Cart Service, which is collected every two weeks), as well as weekly recycling collection (up to two 95-gallon carts per week), seasonal weekly yard trimmings collection (up to one 95-gallon cart per week), and the collection of two eligible bulky items per year at no additional cost.

For households opting out of yard trimmings collection, the monthly service price will be reduced by $5 for all service levels except XS Cart Service.

For Property Owners:

  • If you coordinate the trash service for your rental properties, please communicate with your tenants to determine their preferred cart size and inform them of the upcoming changes. In the Winter/Spring of 2024, Republic Services will contact the property via mail with information about how to select the sizes of carts that best meet the household’s needs and set up billing. Once service begins, there will be a fee associated with changing the cart size, and changes may only be made twice per year. Frequent communication with your tenants during this transition period will help you avoid unwanted fees later on.

  • Beginning at the end of August, collection schedules, recycling information, and more will also be delivered via mail. New trash, recycling, and yard trimmings carts with the City logo will be delivered before the new service begins on September 30th.

  • You will also need to keep your eye out for information from your existing service provider about when to set out your old carts for pick-up.

  • Bottom line: Ensure your tenants are aware of these changes, assist them in selecting the appropriate service level, and inform them when to expect their new carts. If you’re a customer of Mascot Property Management, we’ll facilitate this process for you! Interested in learning more? Check out our Services and Pricing.

For Tenants:

  • If you coordinate your trash service, you can work directly with the city to select your preferred cart size and service level.

  • Keep an eye on your mailbox for important information regarding the new service, including details about service level selection, billing setup, new cart delivery, and new collection schedules.

  • Your existing trash provider will also contact you to schedule the pick up of your old carts.

Program Inclusions and Exceptions:

All single-unit and multi-unit residential homes (with seven or fewer units) within Fort Collins City limits are included in the program. However, the contracted program does not apply to residential dwellings with more than eight units, such as large apartment buildings, condos, or any residence using dumpsters for trash service.

Exceptions to the program include:

  • Households may elect not to receive contracted services and pay a monthly opt-out fee of $11.10.

  • Households in Homeowners Associations that have received exemptions from the program will not be included. To find out if your HOA is exempt, contact your HOA directly.

  • Households may apply for a variance under limited circumstances, and if granted, will not receive services and will not pay the opt-out fee.

Mascot Property Management is excited about the transition to Republic Services and the opportunities it brings to improve waste management in Fort Collins and work towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for our city.
